Honoring their mission to “create and maintain a network of trails to promote:  wellness, sustainable economic development, environmental stewardship and connection to cultural heritage”, the Mountain Maryland Trails Board of Directors, along with over 25 participants and sponsors held their Second Annual Trail of Dreams ride on Saturday, July 16.   This event was being done largely in part to create trail awareness at the local level, as well as to generate fundraising efforts for future trail marketing and promotion.  Funds received to date total nearly $4,300 and donations continue to be received.

In an aggressive cross promotion effort, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad donated up to forty seats for any participant wishing to ride to Frostburg and then enjoy a breezy downhill coast back to Cumberland. This added value helped to establish a family friendly experience for two of the most well-known tourism features in our region.  Upon arriving in Frostburg, some participants joined Andy Vick, Executive Director of the Allegany Arts Council, and Maureen Brewer, Frostburg First’s Main Street Manager, and other art enthusiasts for the dedication of the sculpture garden just near the switchback and the trailhead.  Riders then proceeded to Big Savage for a picnic lunch catered by Passarell’s Deli and Country Store.

The Mountain Maryland Trails Board of Directors wishes to offer special thanks to the event sponsors, which included Rusco Home Improvements, GAP Self Storage, Aircon Engineering, Allegany Aggregates and Belt Construction at the Gold Level and the City of Cumberland’s Office of Economic Development, Cycles N’ Things, Cumberland Trail Connection and Queen City Creamery at the Silver Level.

With trail usage on the rise, as well as the growing interest in its sustainability, the Third Annual Trail of Dreams event is being planned for Saturday, June 2, 2012.  Details are available by visiting www.mmtrails.org or by contacting Mountain Maryland Trail Board Member Pam Cover at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
